today is dongzhi which means its tangyuans day. i remembered how i was complaining during last year's dongzhi because i was in france that day and the closest french dessert that resembles tangyuans is chocolate truffles. the shape, fullstop. sorry but tangyuans are irreplaceable.
i pestered my mom to buy the tangyuan dough for me to roll my own. when i was a kid, my whole family would be up early on this day and get busy in the kitchen. my sis and i would be rolling tangyuans and competing who can roll the roundest, prettiest tangyuans faster but we always lose to our grandma while my mum would be preparing the syrup & my dad laid out the roast duck& stuffs for praying purposes. after my sis went uk for her degree and my grandma retired from the kitchen-scene, it was left with only my mum & i rolling the dainty pink&white tangyuans. its a tradition that never dies in my family simply because i insist on rolling my own. but this year, i was the only one to roll these dolls; not that im complaining. i love messing around in the kitchen anyway.

one plus point about rolling my own = i can create my own patterns, shapes and size of the tangyuans. its like art class.

smiley tangyuans! (:

my parents are in the bestest mood this morning- my mum was humming a lovely tune while boiling the syrup and my dad actually woke up bright&early and drove to another market just to buy my mum's favourite curry puffs for her from this malay stall. my mum secretly smiled at me when i passed her the tray of tangyuans and she asked "you know what day is it today?" before i could answer, she replied herself "its our 24th year wedding anniversary"
how sweet <3
